Dental Crowns

Streamlining Treatment, So it’s More Comfortable and Efficient

So, you’ve received the bad news that your tooth needs a dental crown. If you’ve had a crown in the past, you may remember that completing it requires two lengthy appointments with your dentist and 2 to 3 weeks to finish. Not to mention there may be additional visits needed if there are any problems with your temporary crown breaking or falling out.

You wonder how you’ll ever fit this treatment into your hectic schedule?

Delaying treatment, however, is not an option since your tooth is fractured. Waiting on restoring your tooth until a less busy time may cause more damage, an infection, and could even result in tooth loss.

A Solution for More Efficient Dental Crowns

Smiling professional woman.

At Aesthetic Dentistry of Wickford, we understand that your time is valuable, and that’s why our dentists have invested in an innovative technology called Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics, or CEREC.

This revolutionary technology allows our dentists to design, mill, and place a high quality porcelain crown during one short visit to our office so you don’t have to endure wearing a temporary crown and waiting on your restoration for two or more weeks.

If you need a dental crown in North Kingstown, our team is proud to offer CEREC crowns as a comfortable and efficient alternative to traditional crown.

How Does CEREC Technology Work?

CEREC uses 3-D technology to scan an image of your tooth, which Dr. Verbeyst or Dr. Morisseau will use to design and customize your crown. The restoration is then milled in a machine located in our office so our dentists can permanently place it during your visit. This means you will leave our office with a fully functioning and aesthetically pleasing crown you can rely on for many years to come.

Technology You Can Trust

CEREC is technology that has been in use for more than three decades and our patients can rest assured that the porcelain that is utilized is both durable and capable of blending flawlessly with your smile.

Besides saving you a lot of time, CEREC makes treatment more comfortable for patients with 3-D imaging, which eliminates the need for messy and uncomfortable impressions of your teeth. CEREC is also able to mill veneers, onlays, and inlays for all of your restorative needs.

Dental Crown FAQs – North Kingstown, RI

After we recommend dental crowns, it’s common for people to have questions about the procedure. We want you to have all the information you need from the start, so we’ve answered several dental crown FAQs below. But don’t hesitate to get in touch if there’s anything else you’d like to know. Our outstanding dentists have used dental crowns to restore countless smiles, and we’re always here to help!

Why Do I Need a Dental Crown?

Everyone needs a full set of healthy teeth to eat, speak, and smile, and when we recommend treatment, it’s always with that goal in mind. Here are a few specific examples of when dental crowns are necessary:

  • For cavities that are so large that they can't be repaired with fillings.
  • To complete single dental implants.
  • To strengthen and protect a tooth that’s at risk for breaking due to multiple fillings or fractures.
  • We also recommend dental crowns to strengthen a tooth after a root canal (the tooth’s blood supply has been removed, leaving it brittle and prone to breaking).
  • Dental crowns can be used for certain types of cosmetic work.

Do Dental Crowns Look Natural?

Yes. The one exception would be the fairly rare case in which we recommend a gold crown for a back tooth. However, the vast majority of our crowns are done with our same-day CEREC technology that uses beautiful, tooth-colored ceramic material. We spend time carefully designing the size, shape and color to blend in beautifully with your smile. That results in a crown that looks so natural, no one will know you’ve had dental work!

How Long Will My Dental Crown Last?

Generally speaking, dental crowns last anywhere from 5 to 15 years or more. While the way you care for your crown will have a big impact on its lifespan, maintenance isn’t difficult or complicated (i.e. see the next question!)

How Do I Care For My Dental Crown?

  • Brush and floss daily – The tooth structure under a crown can still get a cavity, especially if plaque and food debris are routinely left around the gumline. Brush gently but thoroughly twice a day, making sure to angle your bristles towards the gumline, and don’t forget to floss.
  • See us for regular checkups – These visits are very important so we can find any potential problems early on before they cause a crown to fail.
  • Avoid bad habits – Don’t chew on anything hard, such as ice, pens, or hard candy, and be mindful when you eat hard or crunchy foods.
  • Wear a nightguard if needed – If you clench and grind at night, a nightguard will protect your crown (and natural teeth) from chipping or cracking.

What Are the Advantages of CEREC Same-Day Crowns?

In addition to the obvious advantage of saving you from making a second visit, there are many other benefits to CEREC same-day crowns:

  • They’re durable and long-lasting – CEREC crowns have a 95% long-term success rate (the same or better as traditional crowns).
  • You don’t have to wear a temporary – A traditional crown means you have to wear a temporary crown for two weeks that can easily break or fall off. CEREC eliminates that step.
  • Digital impressions – Our CEREC technology involves digital impressions that are done by simply scanning your teeth. They’re not only more accurate but also mean you won’t have messy and uncomfortable putty impressions to contend with.
