Making Quality Dental Care Affordable

Dental insurance is a great way to care for you and your family’s dental health and overall wellbeing. However, it can be a little tricky figuring out just how your coverage works. We are happy to be by your side to help you make the most out of your dental insurance in Rhode Island! Keep reading to learn more about how your plan works, and how you can stretch your coverage to enjoy a healthy, lasting smile.

How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance works like medical insurance, except with a bigger emphasis on prevention. Most dental insurance plans make it possible for you to receive two checkups and cleanings per year absolutely free. By incentivizing preventive dental care over treatments to fix problems once they have developed, your dental insurance plan helps you to avoid cavities, gum disease, and other oral health hazards altogether.

While the fine details may vary a bit, coverage typically looks like this:

  • Preventive care is covered between 80% to 100%
  • Restorative procedures are covered between 50% to 80% depending on the complexity of the treatment
  • Elective dentistry procedures are typically not covered by dental insurance

Types of Insurance

Similar to medical insurance, dental insurance can come as a PPO (preferred provider organization) or an HMO (health maintenance organization). A PPO gives you greater choice in who provides your care, so you can choose your dentist without being penalized by higher out-of-pocket costs.

Additionally, funds in an HSA (health savings account) or FSA (flexible spending account) can be put toward dental care. This works a little differently than dental insurance, and often has more exclusions. You can find out just what yours covers by contacting your account manager directly.

What Does In-Network Mean?

Finding a dentist who is in-network with your dental insurance provider is the most convenient way to get the most out of your investment. When you do, you won’t have to pay anything extra out-of-pocket. Simply hand over the amount that is due at the time of the treatment. Your dentist will file the claim and receive the full reimbursement on the back-end. You may still be eligible for the same savings when you visit a dentist who is not in your plan’s network, but you will be required to pay the full cost upfront and wait for a reimbursement to come later on.
